Learning to make the right moves
January 17, 2012
St Joseph’s Nudgee College Chess players joined students from schools throughout Brisbane during the holidays at the College’s inaugural chess camp.
Head Coach of Nudgee College Chess Mr Matt Gilpin reports.
During the Christmas holidays Nudgee College held its first ever chess camp.
The Camp was open to students from all over Brisbane and we had a great turn out with 54 students taking part over two days. Students from Prep to Year 9 received coaching and took part in tournaments and activities such as playing on the College’s giant chess board.
Coaches Tyson Walker, Patrick Byrom and myself provided a variety of lessons designed to help students of varying skills, from students learning how to play chess to students competing in the Premier Level of GPS Chess.
Advanced students were lucky to receive coaching from International Master Moulthun Ly who is currently the second highest ranked chess player in Queensland and the 11th highest in Australia.
Nudgee College students did particularly well in the tournaments with Clint Therakam (Year 9) winning the tournament on both days, Tyler Bailey (Year 5) winning the under 1000 rating prize on the first day and Jacob Wakerly (Year 7) winning the same prize on the second day.
Nudgee College Chess had massive growth in 2011. The number of Year 5-7 students who received coaching during the year doubled from 2010 and both our top primary and high school teams made it to the Inter-school State Finals for the first time in over a decade.
Nudgee College will continue to host more chess camps in 2012. Any parents interested in information can contact me on mgilpin@nudgee.com.
